Description: Love (of many different kinds), sex (of many different kinds) and theatre's quest to unmask reality, all under the relentless gaze of the audience - the public of the title - are the subjects of Lorca's complex, surrealist play. Lorca's assault on sexual, social and theatrical conventions provides many opportunities for symbolism and the exploration of its themes through music and dance, which Sotelo and the producers of the opera have enthusiastically grasped. Sotelo's score is anchored by a flamenco guitarist and solo percussionist, who play almost concertante roles. Key moments in the drama are represented in music in flamenco style, full of wild, swirling erotic energy, and several imortant rôles are assigned to flamenco singers. Seamlessly surrounding these episodes is a richly sonorous modern idiom steeped in the colors and textures of spectralism, by no means devoid of tonal referents, its material sometimes derived from late romanticism, and sometimes from more modern, dissonant styles. The costumes and staging are spectacular, inventive and appropriately surreal. 16:9 widescreen. NTSC region 0. 5.1 Dolby Digital surround or PCM stereo. 142 min.
