Description: Written when he was very ill (the orchestration of the final movement was completed by Patrick Hadley via dictation ten days before Rootham’s death), the second symphony is a much more inwardwork than his first symphony (studio recorded by Lyrita way back when) and is orchestrated lightly and transparently. You may hear echoes of Vaughan Williams and Moeran and I thought of Rubbra at times. The 43-minute Ode is from 1928 and it sets all 31 stanzas of Milton’s text in music that ranges from the pastorally simple to the exultantly refulgent, a very large orchestra vividly and sensitively handled. 2 CDs. Texts included.
