VISSARION SHEBALIN (1902-1963): Orchestral Music, Vol. 1 - Orchestral Suites No. 1, Op. 18 and No. 2, Op. 22.

Description: These suites date from 1934 and 1935 and are compiled from incidental music for three stage plays. Needless to say, these are lighter pieces, one imagines, than Shebalin's five symphonies (which apparently are not going to be part of this series which seems to have only one more disc with the third orchestral suite as part of it); 5 of the 14 tracks here are waltzes. Shostakovich also wrote much film and theatre music making use of traditional forms and genres and Shebalin's are in the same vein. The only reason they aren't as sharp and sardonic is likely due to the plays they were written for. But the music is richly orchestrated and absolutely enjoyable on its own, conservative, terms. Siberian Symphony Orchestra; Dmitry Vasiliev.
