Description: If this three-and-a-half-hour long opera buffa, by a Portuguese composer and premiered in Lisbon 1739, isn't the height of unusual repertoire, I'd like to know what is. The only surviving complete opera by Almeida, who learned the Neapolitan buffa style during four years of study in Italy, La Spinalba is stylistically near Pergolesi and employs the standard Scarlattian orchestra of pairs of oboes, horns and strings. Almeida sometimes breaks away from the secco recitative-da capo aria mould and, if you're dipping into this very long work, the excellent notes identify where to find some of his special felicities. No libretto but the printed synopsis occupies almost six full pages. 3 CDs. Italian libretto available on-line. Ana Quintans (soprano), Fernando Guimarães (tenor), Cátia Moresa (mezzo), Luís Rodrigues (bass), Os Músicos do Tejo; Marcos Magalhães.
