THIERRY LANCINO (b.1953): Requiem.
Catalogue Number: 12N085
Description: Lancino's large-scale and ambitious requiem extends the scope of the traditional work by adding a dimension of dramatic oratorio in the form of a conflicted dialogue between the Biblical David and the pagan Sybil, the prophetess craving death. The sections of the Latin Mass are interspersed among these dramatic episodes, making this requiem a philosophical examination of the implications of death more than a prayer sequence belonging to one particular tradition. Impressive massed choral and orchestral effects are freely used, tying the work to the established conventions of the many requiems of composers through the ages, and the Dies irae uses the familiar plainchant, though broken into fragments. There is a strong tonal element to the idiom, and a melodic eloquence to the solo protagonists' intimate and ardent material, counterbalancing the apocalyptic effects of the work's massive, liturgical sections. Heidi Grant Murphy (soprano), Nora Gubisch (mezzo), Stuart Skelton (tenor), Nicolas Courjal (bass), Chœur de Radio France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France; Eliahu Inbal.
