BRUNO MADERNA (1920-1973): Piano Concerto, Piano Concerto (version for 2 pianos), Concerto for 2 Pianos and Instruments, Quadrivium.
Catalogue Number: 12N067
Description: If you're frightened by Maderna's name but you love 20th century music from certain parts of the first half of the century, pay attention to this: the 1942 piano concerto, performed only once before being forgotten, is a short, single-movement, 11:40 piece which is plainly influenced by Ravel and Prokofiev, probably via Maderna's studies with Malipiero. The 1948 Concerto for two pianos and instruments, almost exactly the same length, is just as plainly inspired by Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, the instruments in question being two harps, celesta, xylophone, vibraphone, cymbal, snare drum, tam tam and timpani. So, be afraid of Quadrivium if you like, but this is a budget-priced disc and you really should hear the other works! Aldo Orvieto (piano), Fausto Bongelli (piano 2), Gruppo 40.6 (Concerto for 2 pianos and instruments), Orchestra della Fondazione "Arena di Verona"; Carlo Miotto.
