GEORGE BIZET (1838-1875): Clovis et Clotilde, Te Deum.
Catalogue Number: 12M012
Description: This cantata won the 1857 Prix de Rome and plainly demonstrates that Bizet's future was on the operatic stage as its 34-minute course of Introduction, five scenes and final ensemble (the bishop Remigius is the third character), telling the story of the conversion of the Frankish King Clovis after defeating the Alemanni in 496, could easily be half of an act of an opera. The 18-minute Te Deum, still rather operatic, was one of the mandatory works sent back to Paris while Bizet was in Rome. Texts available on-line. Katarina Jovanovic (soprano), Philippe Do (tenor), Mark Schnaible (bass), Chœur Régional du Nord - Pas-de-Calais, Orchestre National de Lille; Jean-Claude Casadesus.
