Catalogue Number: 12K102
Description: The Concerto grosso, in typical Gudmundsen-Holmgreen style, takes the Baroque form and plays with it, as though a relic of the Baroque had somehow been transported to the present day, having accumulated the accretions of several centuries of music history in the process. The ensemble music forms evocative, plastic soundscapes, while the soloist group interacts with the orchestra in a variety of ways, and using material that ranges form deliberately distorted baroque idioms to fragmentary modern gestures. Moving Still was written for the 200th anniversary of H. C. Andersen, and consists of a motoric, quasi-minimalistic first movement and a poetic second, using contrasting Andersen texts. Last Ground begins with several minutes of electronically manipulated sea sounds- crashing waves, violent and elemental. Out of this background - foreground, really - the tentative sound of the quartet slowly emerges, with a gently pulsating figure with a basic tonal referent and a small repeated sequence of chords, finally overwhelmed and consumed by the continuing sea sounds. Danish-English texts. Paul Hillier (baritone), Kronos Quartet, Danish NationalSymphony Orchestra/DR; Thomas Dausgaard. SACD hybrid
