Description: Wolff's is an attractive, easy-going piece in conventional three-movement layout, incorporating recognisable elements of Brazilian styles, but otherwise falling into a broadly neoclassical bracket. Bavicchi is more modern, though not excessively so; not much here that would worry Bartók. A brooding first movement gives way to an energetic scherzo with abundant metrical changes constantly unsettling the rhythmic pulse. The finale is as long as the first two movements together, and covers a broader range of expressive territory and a sense of developing narrative, with some eloquent and brilliant writing for the soloist. Gary Dranch (clarinet).
