Description: Four contemporary trios sharing a broadly extended tonal idiom, beginning with Reeves' energetic work inspired by the natural history of squid; the composer is fascinated by the mysterious nature and complicated physiology of these creatures and their color-changing abilities find musical analogies in the quicksilver transformations in this exciting piece. Mealor's Borderlands is inspired by the poetic philosophy of W.B. Yeats, and incorporates passages of impressionistic mystery and dark-hued, slightly sinister, occult drama. The Pickard is a solidly constructed architecturally cohesive narrative with some apparent antecedents in Rawsthorne, Mathias and Hoddinott. Grange's four-movement work pays tribute to the æsthetics of Marc Chagall, with thematic cross-references between movements mirroring the artist's use of similar motifs in different canvases. The piece is a study in changing, colorful textures and coherent motivic development. Chagall Trio.
