Description: Premiered by Erich Kleiber in Berlin in 1931, this radio opera has been revived from its piano score and instrumented for this recording by Andrew Hannan. Lasting 66 minutes, the story is of a man worn out by factory work who signs up for work on ship and ends up in the paradise island of liberation and freedom that is Malpopita. A combination of speech and singing, there are the expected echoes of Weill, machine music and sleazy Berlin cabaret which infected many of the satirical stage works of the period by composers of this generation. German-English libretto. Thorsten Hennig (tenor), Lilia Milek (soprano), Axel Herrig (baritone), "Malpopita" Chamber Choir and Orchestra; Jin Wang.
