Description: Dating from 1910 to 1969 (with a large gap between 1927 and 1960), Wellesz' piano œuvre consists entirely of little cycles, ranging from three to six pieces. About 70% of the music is pre-1927, meaning that the style ranges fairly narrowly from late Romantic (the very earliest couple of cycles) to pre-Schoenbergian atonal expressionism with a few pieces which come close to a Debussian Impressionism. Many are in dance-form or implied dance styles, a couple range as long as eight minutues, forming little dramatic tone poems, making this an attractive package for collectors of pre-Second Vienna School decaying Romanticism. His three late cycles are often freely atonal, still quite expressive and with much thinner textures than before, with his 1969 "Studies in Gray" an emotionally drained mixture of grief and defiance. 3 CDs. Budget-price. Margarete Babinsky (piano).
