Description: Everything here but the 1887 tone poem Hakon Jarl (a 21-minute piece whose detailed programmatic notes places it alongside the symphonic poems we just offered last month by the Norwegian Selmer ) is a first recording. The first five items listed above were gathered and published in 1876 as Nordic Folk Dances and make an effective, 24-minute cycle of "Norwegian Dances" to stand alongside the Brahms/Dvorák collections of Hungarian and Slavonic dances. A Carnival Feast (1882), being a ballet divertissement, is less overtly folk-inspired than its companions on the disc but is thoroughly engaging light music of the best type. Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra; Bo Holten.
