Description: Delius’ suite of c.1888-91 is made up of four character pieces in the spirit of his friend Grieg’s Lyric Pieces but there are already fingerprints of the mature composer to be discovered. The only other available recording of this is that from Dutton six years ago (09L003). Purveyor of light music and popular tunes Haydn Wood also has a piano concerto in Hyperion's "Romantic Piano Concerto" series and this 1928 concerto is equally attractive with beautiful melodies and grateful work for the soloist (Wood was a violinist). This is at least the fifth recording of Coleridge-Taylor’s lovely, lushly melodic and rather Dvorákian concerto and that makes it almost standard rep. Who’d have thought?
