Description: Universally considered during the 19th century to be Marschner’s best opera, this 1829 historical drama is ultimately based on Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe. It is close to Weber’s Euryanthe in structure and contains a mix of German and Italian elements - extended sections of secco recitative but also choral writing drawn from the tradition of German choral societies. 2 CDs.
