Description: This is a different completion of Finzi's first attempt at a multi-movement orchestral work, dating from 1923-4 and dedicated to the memory of Ernest Farrar and, tacitly, to other artists killed in the Great War. (Chandos issued the first completion, by Richard Thomas, in 1991). The other rarity is Vaughan Williams' 22-minute work of 1947-49, setting poetry by Matthew Arnold and which shares Finzi's and Gurney's and Butterworth's recollections of English landscapes and the enduring quality of life on the land regardless of the interruptions of war; it may have been V-W's elegy for his fallen artist friends as well. Texts included. Roderick Williams (baritone), Jeremy Irons (speaker), City of London Choir, London Mozart Players; Hilary Davan Wetton.
