Description: World Premiere Recording of this 1891 work, which comes after Le Cid and Esclarmonde and before Werther and Thaïs. Set in ancient Bactria, its main character is Zoroaster and the subject the founding of his religion. Intensely dramatic, the work includes the traditional ballet (in Act IV), vast ensemble pieces and important choral parts with an orchestra with larger than usual brass and percussion (which help stoke up the exoticism, especially in the dances). In the usual packaging for this deluxe series: a 152-page 5.5" x 8.25" book containing a nine-page contemporary obituary of the composer, three articles on the opera, some of Massenet's own reflections, synopsis and libretto, sprinkled with relevant period illustrations. 2 CDs. French-English libretto. Catherine Hunold (soprano), Kate Aldrich (mezzo), Luca Lombardo (tenor), Jean-François Lapointe (baritone), Chœur Lyrique et Orchestre Symphonique Saint-Étienne Loire; Lauren Campellone.
