Description: This rarely-heard work is a product of the Niedermayer school of French sacred music composition of the mid 19th century which looked back to Palestrina for sacred "authenticity". The relative austerity of the style, with simple melodies and mostly monophonic choral parts, is enhanced by this 2008 transcription for piano and the homely harmonium made by the conductor of this Breton choir. (A Cyprès/Musique en Wallonie recording of the orchestral version released in 1995 provided a performance rather more dramatic than what Mr. Niedermayer himself may have preferred.) Ensemble Vocal Mélisme(s); Gildas Pungier.
