FREDERICK DELIUS (1862-1934): Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra, Violin Concerto, Cello Concerto (ed. Thomas Beecham [1879-1961] and Eric Fenby [1906-1997]).

Description: None of Delius' concertos have been completely accepted in the concert hall and, as of now, only two or three other versions of each of these works are available on CD. All single-movement works, often described as "rhapsodic", they are anything but, being laid out in detailed fashion and often, like the violin concerto, rigorously worked out from two bars of material in the beginning of the piece. One other note: at least one previous recording of the double concerto (Tasmin Little again with Raphael Wallfisch in 1991 on EMI Eminence) used the edition of the cello part by Herbert Withers (approved by Delius) to help smooth over some technically "awkward" passages but Watkins has restored almost all of Delius' original notes - around 48 bars in all. Tasmin Little (violin), Paul Watkins (cello), BBC Symphony Orchestra; Andrew Davis. SACD hybrid
