THÉODORE DUBOIS (1837-1924): Piano Quartet in A Minor, FLORENT SCHMITT (1870-1958): Hasards, Op. 96, REYNALDO HAHN (1874-1947): Piano Quartet in G.

Description: The 70-year-old Dubois' piano quartet starts off sounding like Vierne - troubled, dark, a first movement full of racing anxiety - and the second movement provides little relief. Suddenly, the years and cares drop away in the third movement Allegro leggiero and a bright, bustling finale wraps up a happy ending. Hasards (1939) is a graceful, witty and sparkling exercise in neo-classicism while Hahn's (1947) offers sweet melodies, gentle nostalgia, moderate tempos, only a few flashes of passion, everything charming and urbane. Ames Piano Quartet.
