Description: Escaich's piece treats the two instruments as equal partners, the piano not infrequently contributing propulsive figuration while the organ carries the melodic thread. The work is harmonically sumptuous, propelled by processes that lie somewhere between ostinato and minimalism. Quincunx duplex is a joint composition, in which the two composers collaborated on some movements, developing each other's ideas, and composed others independently. The sections are brief and extremely varied - some using the organ as ambient backdrop to the piano, others involving both in tightly argued thematic development (and some of the themes - BACH and DSCH for instance - are instantly recognizable); there are canons, toccatas and chorales, spatial effects and rigorous counterpoint. Heininen's Täällä was written at the same time, in 2002. Its first movement is a funeral lament, with tolling bells, the organ and piano exchanging sorrowful, songful phrases while the second is a more agitated development of the same materials. Annikka Konttori-Gustafsson (piano), Jan Lehtola (organ). SACD hybrid.
