Description: World premiere recordings of the very early pieces - a Nocturne, Scherzo and Dream About a Doll - from 1934 which, in aspects of grotesquerie and some perpetuum mobile textures, already show some of the composer's mature stylistic features. The hard-edged, tough-minded Fifth sonata was written in 1953 after he was imprisoned in Stalin's end-of-life anti-Semitic purge; a wistful andante, a driving, agitated scherzo and a kind of waltz macabre precede an even more driven finale. The Fourth dates from 1947, while he was finishing the cello concerto offered on p. 3, but there is no Jewish music here; this is absolute music with the expected Shostakovichian overtones. Stefan Kirpal (violin), Andreas Kirpal (piano).
