Description: World premiere recordings of the first three sonatas. The first two are both works of a very talented 18-year-old steeped in the rhythmic and textural characteristics of Chopin and also, in No. 2, Mendelssohn, with just enough little touches of later Romantic influences to keep the attention riveted. No. 3 dates from 1912 and attains a greater expressive depth while still indebted to the Chopin of the Ballades while also letting the listener know, harmonically, that Bowen is aware of the existence of Debussy. 2 CDs. Danny Driver (piano).
