Description: Collectors of Arnell's symphonies might want to know that the 37-minute The Angels (1957) rather looks like a symphony in its structure: three movements beginning with a theme-and-variations, a central slow movement of true symphonic proportions and a brief finale transforming the material as needed by the ballet scenario. The idiom is of the Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 and the composer himself stated "It is, in fact, a symphony". The Great Detective (1953) is a 28-minute comedy ballet with roles for Holmes, Watson and Moriarty although they are not called by those names and has the sparkle and wit of the best light music. BBC Concert Orchestra; Martin Yates.
