Description: The symphony (1964) was one of the first Soviet works to use serialism, although the employment of ashug melodic material and other elements of traditional Azerbaijani music produces a work which sounds both modern (how about those piano clusters in the first movement?) and "folk-like". Pure traditional melodies are to be found in the 14-minute tone-poem Leyla and Mejnun of 1947 while the 1960 Don Quixote is an eight-segment suite of evocative film music ("Travels", "Sancho the Governor", "Don Quixote's Death", etc.) for a movie by director Grigory Kozintsev. Russian Philharmonic Orchestra; Dmitry Yablonsky.
