FERDINAND REBAY (1890-1953): Sonatas for Violin and Guitar in E Minor and in C Minor, Sonata for Viola and Guitar in D Minor.
Catalogue Number: 10R051
Format: SACD hybrid
Description: Three discs from Brilliant Classics in 2011 and 2012 marked the rediscovery of this forgotten Viennese composer of a crepuscular late Romanticism. Those involved sonatas for flute and clarinet with guitar and quartets for guitar and strings. Like all but one of those previously recorded works, the violin sonatas here date from 1942 while the viola sonata is undated but has to be no earlier than 1925 when Rebay began taking up the guitar. As we noted on Rebay’s first appearance on disc, he is in a direct line from Brahms and Joseph Fuchs in the autumnal quality and conservative style. José M. Álvarez Losada (violin), Joaquín Riquelme (viola), Pedro Mateo González (guitar).
