Description: That question mark right before this note is due to the almost non-existent notes supplied by the clarinettist for this recording made 14 years ago but which apparently languished in Hamburg archives until the group of supscribers who take up the last page and a half of the booklet supplied the funds to liberate it. Stark was the author of a clarinet method still in use in Germany but it seems that few knew of his compositions. No dates are given for these but the two concertos, though separated by 37 opus numbers, are in a conservative early Romantic style (the first in an unusual single-movement form) whose closest referents are Weber (in the Second) and Mendelssohn. Beautiful stuff, lovely lyrical lines in slow movements and bouncy tunes in fast ones. A real find! Dmitri Ashkenazy (clarinet), Hamburg Symphony; David Curtis.
