These are sonate da chiesa in the form of Corelli and other Bolognese composers only Manfredini offered the option of using more than single players per part. Tempo indications are flexible and melodic and harmonic invention plentiful, moods ranging from richly dissonant expressiveness to the simplicity of the 12th, a Pastorale which resembles folk music.
