Description: The fourth volume in Naxos' Meyer series gives us his first four essays in the quartet medium, from the 1960s and early 70s. Not entirely surprisingly, the 1963 First is very much influenced by the sonorist aesthetic that was the prevailing trend in contemporary Polish music at the time. Six and eight years later, the Second and Third show the strongly emerging influence of Lutolawski, an important model for Meyer, on whose work he has become a noted authority. By the Fourth, a tendency toward tonal centers (of a sort) and a sense of harmonic progression has emerged, with Meyer's quartet style showing signs of embracing elements of the idioms of the towering figures of mainstream 20th-century quartet writing, Bartók and Shostakovich, which can be more plainly felt in the subsequent quartets. Wieniawski String Quartet.
