Description: I almost didn't offer this since som many of these sonatas have been recorded multiple times but, the relatively neglected Rubbra sonata, typically inward-looking and lyrical, and the first recording of Keys' 1957 sonata (indeed the only recording of anything by him), made me change my mind. Keys was an academic at various universities throughout his career but he also won the Festival of Britain Prize for composition in 1951 for his clarinet concerto. The sonata is a three-movement work of 21 minutes firmly in the tonal tradition of all the works here which precede it chronologically although imbued with some of the nervous anxiety of the time of its composition. 2 CDs. Alexander Baillie (cello), John Thwaites (piano).
