Description: People who find Rutter's choral music uh, shall we say, somewhat sweet? might be pleasantly surprised by his 1979 Suite Antique. A six-movement work of 20 minutes, it has the general air of light music cum 70s independent English movie film-score and is very attractive and entertaining with a few quite haunting themes. Françaix's 1959 concerto (only otherwise available on the three-disc Wergo box we offered last January, 01O059) has all of his customary tunefulness, wit and instrumental clarity. Glass manages to marry baroque keyboard gestures to his characteristic language in the first two movements of his 2002 concerto before taking the composition well into jazz territory in the finale with its syncopated rhythms and jazz bass lines. Christopher D. Lewis (harpsichord), John McMurtery (flute), West Side Chamber Orchestra; Kevin Mallon.
