Description: A student of D'Indy, Vreuls was an active member of the Schola Cantorum and had much early success (Ysaÿe played his Symphonie for Violin and Orchestra in New York in 1904). In composing, he eschewed Debussian Impressionism in favor of the path taken by Franck, Fauré and Lekeu and his two violin sonatas (1900 and 1922-23) are fine examples of that school, full of long-breathed, generous melody, free from extremes of emotion and marked by a comfortable generosity of spirit which makes them a particular pleasure to listen to. Eliot Lawson (violin), Diane Andersen (piano).
