Description: From the same pianist who gave us the Dutton Epoch disc of Ashton's piano sonatas comes this disc of Victorian cello sonatas. Ashton's, from 1882, is brisk and elegant, moving along at a bright pace in its outer movements while allowing for reflection and inwardness in its adagio; I found it rather more appealing and fresh than any of his piano sonatas. Liddle was studying under Stanford at the time he wrote his sonata in 1889 (and his teacher was finishing his own second sonata at the very same time) and this is more plush, well-upholstered and, OK, "Victorian" than Ashton's. The 1900 Elegy, no miniature at ten minutes, is a deeply-felt and moving lament. Simon Fryer (cello), Leslie D'Ath (piano).
