Description: Inspired by Henryk Sienkiewicz' novel "With Fire and Sword", Noskowski's 18-minute tone-poem, composed in 1895 (after his two symphonies and after a period when he withdrew from symphonic composition in favor of songs, choral and chamber works) evokes the vast Ukrainian steppes, the sounds of battle and a Polonaise to let you know the victors in a sweepingly Romantic, almost cinematic panorama which compares with the great symphonic poems of Smetana and Dvorák. Live recordings from the 2011 "Chopin and his Europe" festival in Warsaw. Alexander Lonquich (1849 Érard fortepiano), Orchestra des Champs-Élysées; Philippe Herreweghe.
