Description: The main work here is the 24-minute sonata by the Englishwoman Smith, whose two symphonies were recorded by Chandos seven years ago (03G049). It's a relaxed work of Mendelssohnian elegance with a whiff of the salon and an infectious Pastorale finale. And there's not a word in the booklet about Smith or her sonata! Schleicher's 11-minute sonatina from 1825 is the only other piece here over ten minutes but everything is well worth your time if you collect clarinet chamber music. The performer plays four different clarinets (two owned by the late Dieter Klöcker) and one chalumeau. Luigi Magistrelli (clarinet), Claudia Bracco (piano, harpsichord), Ensemble Il Cenacolo della Chimera.
