Description: Premiered at the end of 1814, this was Rossini's biggest flop (and its predecessor was Il turco in Italia, making the contrast even more stark) which he ended up cannibalizing for Elizabetta, regina d'Inghilterra, Torvaldo e Dorliska, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola and Adina. Its theme of the mad Polish king who banishes his queen on the lies of his smitten minister and friend has led the stage director to set this in a modern asylum but that doesn't alter the fact that the music is vintage early Rossini. World Premiere Recording. Daniela Barcellona (mezzo), Olga Peretyatko (soprano), Antonino Siragusa (tenor), Andrea Concetti (baritone), Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Communale di Bologna; Michele Mariotti. 16:9 widescreen. Dolby Digital 5.1 or PCM Stereo. NTSC Region 0. 164 min. + 19 min. "Making of Sigismondo".
