Description: Sciarrino's setting as a Singspiel of Henry James' novella about unfulfilled desires, decay and corruption, set in that most beautifully corrupt and decaying city, Venice, provides the composer ample opportunity for his trademark sonic tapestry of immersive atmosphere, made up of exquisitely judged sound effects of the utmost subtlety, constantly on the verge of being overwhelmed by silence. The result is evocative scene-setting for the narrative that is both intensely vivid and terrifyingly insubstantial and ephemeral. Kurtág's extended violin suite, a very different but related study in saying a great deal with the most economical resources, makes a welcome coupling.
