MICHAEL TORKE (b.1961): Fiji, Tahiti.
Catalogue Number: 10N088
Label: Ecstatic Records
Description: Fiji is a 17-minute piece based on a samba rhythm in which six wind instruments double the pitches of six string instruments while five percussionists blend in providing an irresistible, ongoing groove. Tahiti, in eight movements (whose titles are place names in the Tahitian island system), is much longer (35 minutes), is meant to, in Torke's words "capture the perfume of leisure time in a very warm and sunny beautiful place, where worries are few". A wider variety of sounds ensue, from intricate polyrhythmic techniques (Tahiti - Papeete) to a haunting clarinet over slow, pulsating rhythms (Huahine - under the moonlight), to a drum-kit imitation with a hard, rock beat (Maupiti - by the reef), and so on. If you're a Torke fan already, this will be exactly what you're looking for. 10/10 Ensemble of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic; Clark Rundell.
