Description: Attractive and accessible, these pieces are written in traditional forms, with acknowledgement of familiar devices - sonata form and the like. The trio is light and lively, described by the composer as being of somewhat Gallic character; a waltz does duty as an elegant scherzo, following a lyrical slow movement and framed by fast outer movements. The sonata is a classically proportioned work, with a wistful and melodic central movement between a broad allegro and a mercurial finale which alternates two strongly contrasting types of material. Like the other pieces, the trio is grounded in tonality, with a quirkily worked out treatment of an odd little phrase forming a diverting middle movement, before an initially dissonant elegy, which resolves into a more relaxed allegretto - a memorial for Nicholas Maw - rounds out the work. Rowland Sutherland (flute), Fidelio Trio.
