Catalogue Number: 10N084
Description: Tide, which exists in several versions, originated as music for a dance piece 'about' water. In the light of this visual, descriptive background, a couple of things are immediately apparent; the music abounds in quasi-onomatopœic depictions of water effects - droplets, swirling fluidity, surface energy and becalmed depths - and, the idiom is instantly accessible, unobtrusively uncomplicated and very tonal. An abundance of rippling gestures repeatedly suggests a kind of minimalism, while sonorous acoustical depths vividly depict the strength and mystery of aquatic deeps and the slow motion and evolution of many waters. The insistently pounding storm movement evokes a very visceral response to the subject - entirely appropriate to a dance piece; one has no difficulty in visualizing the kinds of choreography that the music suggests - and throughout the music is powerfully atmospheric and physically, tangibly immersive. Various artists; Jeremy Holland-Smith (conductor).
