JESÚS VILLA-ROJO (b.1940): Cello Sonata II, Lamento (version B) for Cello, Vocals and Pre-Recorded Cello, Oración serena for Cello and Piano, 7 Expresiones for Solo Cello.
Catalogue Number: 10N075
Description: The substantial sonata opens with a tough, driven allegro, reminiscent of Prokofiev, followed by an intensely lyrical, chorale-like slow movement and a vigorous dancing finale. The language is basically tonal, as in all the works here, though very chromatic, with folk-like quasi-vocal inflections. Based around an actual vocal recording - fragments of a flamenco song - Lamento takes this a step further, the interweaving cello lines emulating and interacting with the voice. The Oración is a tribute to the victims of the 2004 Madrid bombings, a solemn lament, very melodic, while the suite of Expresiones refer to poetry of St. John of the Cross in emotionally charged reflections which include some marvelously creative instrumental effects. Asier Polo (cello), Amaia Zipitria (piano - sonata), Gerardo López Laguna (piano), Rafael Romero "El Gallina" (vocals).
