Description: Moronically, unable to count, we called Vol. 2 the last batch of these truly remarkable sonatas, often Beethovenian but generally looking forward to Weber, Schubert and Romanticism but plainly, there were three more: Nos. 3 and 4 from 1824, the former shot through with a march-like motif and with a Schubertian melancholy and resignation, the latter its polar opposite, extrovert and ebullient with much bravura required and quite a lot of anticipation of Chopin's mature style. No. 10 (1831) combines Czerny the innovator in sonata form with the legendary composer of etudes and exercises, producing a work of such awesome difficulty that it was a required work for graduating pianists at the Paris Conservatory until the 1930s. The remaining works range from salon delicacy to serene Classicism to the turbulent Romanticism of the 14-minute Gran Capriccio of 1828 which is a mini-sonata in its own right. 2 CDs. Martin Jones (piano).
