Description: Like Maurice Greene, Thomas Chilcot and, to a lesser extent, Boyce and Arne, Jones was a worthy English composer eclipsed by the presence in his country of Handel. These harpsichord works were published in 1732 and, as Meyerson puts it, they have "the depth of Johann Sebastian Bach, the wildness of Vivaldi, and the fresh tunefulness of Purcell" or, as Grove suggested, due to their marked textural contrasts implying differentiation between solo and tutti, they feel like transcriptions of a Corelli or a a Vivaldi concerto. Vivid, memorable stuff! 2 CDs. Mitzi Meyerson (harpsichord).
