It begins with Columbus' triumphant return to Barcelona and ends in the tormented delirium of his death-bed scene and, as in Cristóbal Colón and in all of his stage works since 1975, Balada, in his own words has "one foot in the past and one in the future" where "abrasive contemporary orchestra sonorities coexist with highly melodic vocal lines". 2 CDs. Spanish-English libretto. John Garrison (tenor), Judith Jenkins (soprano), David Okerlund (baritone), Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and Repertory Chorus; Robert Page.
