VAGN HOLMBOE (1909-1996): Violin Sonatas No. 1, No. 2, Op. 16 & No. 3, Op. 89, Haiduc, Op. 193, Bagatelle No. 1 "Arabesque", Reminiscences for Violin Solo, Violin Solo.
Catalogue Number: 10L077
Description: Collectors familiar with his personal metamorphosis style of symphonic composition will be surprised to find that almost all of his violin works are Bartókian in their folk-music sources. The first two sonatas (1935 and 1939), the folk-fiddling Violin Solo of 1929, the 1928 Bagatelle and the very late 1993 Haiduc all make use of the folk music styles he studied during his late 1930s trip to Romania (with a few admixtures of the Danish folk fiddling tradition). Even the 1965 third sonata's slow movement is indebted to this material. Johannes Søe Hansen (violin), Christine Bjørkøe (piano).
