Description: Long attributed to Handel (but apparently never recorded), this oratorio was performed in Hamburg for the 1731 Feast of St. Michael. Like many of Telemann's oratorios of his Hamburg period, this is much more like a full-length opera act and its martial qualities (three trumpets and timpani) are explained by the fact that Michaelmas was a fiercely confessional event for the Lutherans and the music for it tended toward the militaristic! German-English texts. Annemei Blessing-Leyhausen, Annegret Kleindopf (sopranos), Laurie Reviol (mezzo), Kai Wessel (alto), Julian Prégardien, Jörn Lindemann (tenors), Ekkehard Abele, Stephan Schreckenberger (bass), La Statione Frankfurt; Michael Schneider.
