Description: This disc traverses the piano works from early in Lindberg's career to those from recent years, and chart a progression in style of stark contrast. The early (1970s) Piano Pieces are strictly serial (in every parameter), angular and uncompromising, the only readily apparent connection to the much freer later works being a thorough sense of inner dramaturgy which belies the pieces' technical abstraction. By 1979's Play I a more seductive sound-world is clearly in evidence, with Scriabinesque colorations to the harmony. By the time of the works from a decade later to the present, a vibrant, thoroughly original vocabulary had emerged, with an undeniable enthusiasm for sheer piano virtuosity which harks back to Liszt, and a post-impressionist's sense of sonority. Echoes of Messiaen are also apparent in these exhilarating and readily approachable, though still meticulously organized, recent works. Ralph van Raat (piano), Maarten van Veen (second piano).
