JEAN CRAS (1879-1932): Piano Trio in C, Cello Sonata, Largo in F Sharp Minor for Cello and Piano.
Catalogue Number: 10K007
Description: If one judges his 1910 opera Polyphème as the marker of the beginning of Cras' mature style, the works recorded here are "early". Although there was plenty of the lifelong love of his native Brittany in his 1909 string quartet, these works are examples of a brilliant, self-taught composer (who was a naval officer) making his way through forms and genres, allowing them to channel "...this obligation to write what sings within me...", as he put it in a later letter. The sonata is from 1901, the trio from 1907 and the Largo from 1903 and all show a grasp of form (sometimes with a rigidity which would vanish later), a feeling for emotionally haunting melody and the creative tension between knowledge of musical tradition and the personal urge to assimilate and transcend it. Philippe Koch (violin), Aleksandr Khramouchin (cello), Alain Jacquon (piano).
