Description: First performed in 1935, this was a creature of its times - a big, hour-long work combining music and dance, utilizing the latest techniques in lighting and stagecraft to depict four epochs of American life. "Symbolic Portrait" is the Romantic age, suggested by Edgar Allan Poe; "Pastoral" (with women's chorus) is a pastoral suggested by the poetry of Sidney Lanier; "Westward!" uses Western folk tunes in its depiction of the pioneering spirit of some of Whitman's poetry while the final "Machine Age Blues" (Carl Sandberg is the inspiration) is a sardonically mechanical vision of a robotic future as workers go insane, dancing to their ends. University of Kentucky Women's Choir and Symphony Orchestra; John Nardolillo.
