AGUSTÍ BORGUNYÓ (1894-1967): String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2.
Catalogue Number: 10J074
Label: La Ma de Guido
Reference: LMG 2078
Description: Borgunyó left his native Catalonia and emigrated to the U.S. in 1915 where he spent the rest of his career until his retirement in 1963 writing operettas, ballets, light music for ballroom orchestras and, in the 30s, several commissions from Alfred Wallenstein of "Spanish style" music for radio broadcasts of the Wallenstein Sinfonietta. Almost nothing is known of the composition of these quartets except the date of the second (1963). They are instantly likeable, full of memorable melodies and very much in the tradition of Spanish Classicism. Arriaga would have recognized a fellow countryman yet these are not pastiches or "in the old style" works. Borgunyó plainly valued his country's tradition and the tradition of the genre itself and this somewhat short (49 minute) disc will appeal to practically all string quartet collectors save the most avant-garde minded. Drago Quartet.
